The United Nations’ humanitarian coordination office warned that drought conditions are looming in parts of Somalia following prolonged dry conditions, the UN spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said water sources are drying, pastoralists are abandoning their homes, and commercial water prices have risen to unaffordable levels in some areas. He cited a figure of 4,400,000 people facing high levels of food insecurity and said nearly 6,000,000 people are estimated to need humanitarian assistance this year.
The UN is appealing for $1,420,000,000 to reach 4,600,000 people, the spokesperson said, but that appeal is only 12% funded with roughly $177,000,000 received to date. The UN and partners took early action in areas expected to face poor rains, supported by the Somalia Humanitarian Fund and the Central Emergency Response Fund, but resources remain limited.
The spokesperson said women, girls and marginalized communities are particularly vulnerable. He underlined that Somalia is facing a protracted crisis driven by conflict, poverty, displacement, climate shocks and disease outbreaks, and cautioned that conditions are expected to worsen if the April–June rainy season starts late and falls below normal levels.
