Santa Rosa Art in Public Places Committee names judges for two public-art programs and hears program updates

The Art in Public Places Committee (APPC) voted unanimously Jan. 6, 2025, to nominate committee members to serve as jurors for two upcoming public-art programs and heard a staff presentation on the division’s mapping of the city’s public-art collections and several open calls for work.
Staff presented that the National Arts Program recently closed with 145 people registered, most of them Santa Rosa residents, and that artworks will be dropped off Feb. 1 at the Family Center with judging scheduled on a 2- to 3-hour panel session the week of Feb. 4–6. The committee moved to recommend that “Jeff” serve as the APPC selection-panel juror for the National Arts Program; the motion was seconded and passed on a roll-call vote with all ayes.
The committee also approved two volunteers to serve on the selection panel for Earthbound Art for a Sustainable Future, a call timed to coincide with Earth Day. Staff reported the Earthbound call was limited to California-based artists, the APPC earlier approved a maximum project budget of $15,000, and the program includes $10,000 intended for artist stipends. As of the meeting staff said there were 19 submissions and the call closed Jan. 6. Committee members moved to nominate “Nathan” and “Veil” as APPC selection-panel members for the Earthbound project; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
In an information-only item, Meredith, a staff member in the Arts and Culture Program, described progress on an art audit and public-art mapping project. Meredith said the city’s inventory includes 76 permanent artworks and a separate “transitional” collection of benches and signs. The mapping project will use a GIS platform to publish images and artist information, help identify “art deserts” and clusters, and support maintenance tracking for pieces and benches.
Meredith summarized additional program activity and timelines: the city’s 30th-anniversary series (listed at July 31–Aug. 31 in the staff presentation) will open applications Jan. 15 for musicians, food vendors and nonprofit partners; an open call to decorate Big Belly trash cans closes Jan. 15; the Colden Creek and Brooklyn Community mural calls close Jan. 20; two Findlay Center exhibitions are scheduled to open Jan. 9 (Quilt Guild) and Jan. 24 (Redwood Chinese [sic] Empire Association); and staff said social-media advertising in December reached about 31,000 views and produced 24 new page likes.
Committee members asked logistical questions about the selection-panel meetings (staff indicated panels are intended to meet once and to reserve roughly two hours) and whether panels would review submissions in advance by email (staff said materials would be emailed in advance but scoring would be completed during the panel meeting because the online scoring system is not available). Staff noted some panels will include city employees from other departments as volunteer panelists.
The APPC adjourned and noted its next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 3, 2025.
