Salt Lake County’s Board of Equalization approved 164 staff recommendations, approved two significant assessment adjustments, accepted 42 late appeals and denied five, and recommended dismissal of green‑belt rollback appeals filed after the statutory deadline at a brief board meeting.
The approvals and rulings occurred during the board of equalization meeting. Board members approved a list of 164 recommendations identified by staff, approved two assessment adjustments that staff characterized as both at least 20 percent and $1,000,000 in size, and voted to accept 42 late appeals under Tax Commission rules while denying five others. The board also recommended dismissal of green‑belt rollback appeals that were filed after the statutory deadline, citing lack of jurisdiction.
The 164 recommendations were presented as an item on the agenda and approved following a motion by Arlen and a second (second not specified on the record). The board recorded the motion as passed. For the two "significant adjustments," staff explained these meet the threshold of 20 percent and $1,000,000 and asked for approval; the board approved those adjustments after a motion by Sheldon and a second by Suzanne.
On late appeals, staff said 42 appeals were being recommended for acceptance under the Tax Commission rules and five were recommended for denial because of the criteria applied. The board moved to approve the staff recommendations; the motion was recorded as made by Suzanne with Sheldon seconding and was approved on voice vote.
For a separately listed group of green‑belt rollback appeals, staff advised the board that those appeals had been filed after the statutory deadline and, consequently, the board did not have jurisdiction to hear them. The board moved to dismiss those appeals; the motion was recorded as made by Arlen with Suzanne seconding and passed on voice vote.
Board staff also welcomed new members and said they will schedule an orientation for new board members to explain how the county tax offices work, the board’s role, and related procedures. Tax Administrator Brad Neff said, "we would like to put together ... a meeting for you all to sort of see how the tax offices work and so we'll be coordinating that with the new members," and Chris Harding, the county auditor and clerk of the Board of Equalization, offered his welcome.
The meeting included routine procedural votes (approval of minutes from Dec. 10 among them) and no roll‑call vote tallies were recorded in the transcript; approvals were taken by voice vote and were noted as passing unanimously in the record. The board adjourned after the listed items and the staff announcements.
The actions taken affect property tax assessments and appeals processes for Salt Lake County taxpayers and will be implemented according to staff procedures and applicable Tax Commission rules.
