Bannock County approves letter of support for Pocatello riverfront access project

Bannock County commissioners voted to approve a letter of support for the City of Pocatello’s application for grant funding to develop a parking lot, boat dock and additional riverfront access along the Portneuf River.
Planning Director Hal Jensen told commissioners the request pertains to a parcel that is the former right-of-way of an old state highway north of Pocatello, on the west side of town toward the Simplot and FMC areas. “You have in front of you a request from the city of Pocatello, specifically … asking a letter of support for from the commission to the city for the development of a parking lot [and] boat dock,” Jensen said.
The letter is intended to support the city’s grant pursuit for an expanded Greenway Trail connection and riverfront recreational access. Jensen said the county has discussed the property previously with city staff and has not yet deeded the parcel to the city. He told commissioners staff will do internal review and, if nothing changes, bring the parcel transfer to a future work session for formal deed action.
Commissioners moved to approve the letter of support and the board recorded a unanimous “aye” vote.
County staff indicated that Hannah Sanger of the City of Pocatello had requested the letter and would likely pick up the signed copy when it is ready. Commissioners did not take a separate vote on any deed transfer; Jensen said that would follow internal review and a future presentation to the board if needed.
