Board updates: superintendent search materials, bond sale savings and other business

Bond sale and budget planning: District staff reported that bonds approved in November 2024 closed Dec. 16 and sold at a yield near 4.2 percent; staff estimated about $1.3 million in debt-service savings over the life of the bonds compared with earlier projections. The board was also reminded that the district will present an Act 1 resolution in advance of the 2025'26 budget; the resolution affirms the district does not plan to raise taxes above the state-mandated index (the district noted its adjusted index based on local factors is 8.1 percent, though the base index is currently 6.1 percent).
Policy committee: The board's policy committee reported several recommended revisions and minor edits; committee members asked that one policy (815.2) be tabled for further administrative work and flagged discussion on a proposed community-school model policy for additional review.
Operational updates: Trustees received status updates on the district's backpack distribution, which school staff said has reached most students but remains incomplete due to canceled shipments and some defective units; district purchasing staff were working to replace faulty units and locate missing shipments. The board also received brief updates on the Edison school construction (foundations largely complete, enclosure and interior work ongoing) and on pool and building change-order items for other projects.
No formal votes on these items were recorded during the public portion of the Jan. 8 meeting; items such as policy revisions and curriculum adoption were placed on forthcoming meeting agendas for action.
