The chief said California’s incidents have prompted requests for assistance and that the city’s ability to send personnel is limited by staffing shortages. He said the department maintains a pocket-sized book with dirt-road access points, bike trails and evacuation routes for the east-side area near 1400 East and Horn/Linden; the department plans to publish an electronic version of that guidance and post it to the city website.
The chief also said the department is hiring: an assistant chief candidate has been offered a position and testing for open firefighter positions has produced a pool of nearly 40 applicants, 15 of whom meet required certifications. He said the department recorded more than 300 additional runs compared with the previous year and described two recent accidents: a rear-end collision in front of Macy’s requiring extrication and a bicycle (e-bike) collision that resulted in an open tibia-fibula fracture.
