The Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission continued 2024 COA 406 (544 N. Park Ave., Lockerbie Square) to its February 5 meeting, asking the applicant to revise elevations to strengthen street‑facing articulation, improve entries and reconsider the use of dark brick and roll‑on sills.
Applicant Michael Mercho presented revisions requested at the previous hearing and showed changes including contrasting brick and skirting. Staff recommended further changes: a lighter base material such as limestone or cast stone, a flat roof canopy over primary entrances to improve the sense of entry, and adjustments to the north‑street facade so the color changes read as integrated rather than applied.
Commissioners emphasized that the current design still reads as a large, largely unarticulated brick wall at the street and suggested moves such as recesses, bays or protrusions that would break the wall up vertically, taller first‑floor windows or a more pronounced base. Multiple members also cautioned against roll‑on brick sills in Indianapolis climate and recommended limestone or metal‑capped sills instead.
The commission agreed to a continuance and instructed staff to work with the applicant on the requested changes; the applicant agreed to return on Feb. 5 with revised drawings.
The hearing record shows staff provided technical suggestions and commissioners offered references to local precedents for articulation. No final decision on the design was made at the January meeting.
