Planning Commission continues Carmel Self Storage hearing to Feb. 26

Staff opened the item by asking the commission to continue the hearing so staff and the applicant could finish a revised plan set that follows direction given at the commission’s Oct. 30, 2024 hearing. Commissioner discussion was brief; no commissioner opposed continuing the item. Commissioner Mendoza moved to continue the matter; the motion passed unanimously. The clerk confirmed a quorum of seven commissioners was present for the vote.
The public speakers who addressed the continuance supported delay so the applicant could complete requested redesigns. Gail Hatter of Anthony Lombardo & Associates, representing the applicant, told the commission the applicant “agrees with the request for a continuance.” Several nearby residents asked the commission to require the applicant to follow Carmel Valley Master Plan policies and the recommendations of the Carmel Valley Land Use Advisory Committee, and to reconsider the scale and traffic impacts of the proposed two-story perimeter building. A resident noted concerns about safety for trail users if the project is not scaled down.
Commissioner Shaw asked staff to confirm that the previous hearing’s direction to explore reducing the bulk of the two-story perimeter building (identified in the record as Building A) would be addressed in the redesign. Staff responded that adjustment to the size and placement of Building A is the main reason for the continuance and that the applicant would be asked to address it. Staff also said they would re-review the earlier hearing record to ensure no issue was missed.
The commission did not take any additional action on the project beyond the continuance. The hearing was formally continued to Feb. 26, 2025.
