Mister Kaufman told the council the works, titled Black Star and Silent Pray, were commissioned by the late Ken Hill for Comanche Peak Ranch and that the estate chose to donate them to the community. Kaufman said the Black Star piece installed in Shanley Park has an estimated value "a little over $600,000." Jeff Ferris, identified by staff as the executor of the estate and the foundation's president, was noted in the presentation but did not speak at the council table during the agenda item.
Councilmember Oberdier moved to adopt Resolution 24-17 accepting the two statues; the motion was seconded by Mister Wodley and the council voted unanimously to approve the resolution. Staff said a formal acceptance letter will allow the Ken Hill Foundation to document the donation for IRS and nonprofit reporting.
No public comment was recorded during the presentation. The resolution notes the sculptures will be public artwork maintained by the city and adds them to the city's property inventory.
