Commissioners received post-event presentations on Jan. 7 from Michael’s (California Great Sanistral), the Skechers Foundation’s peer-to-peer Friendship Walk, and the community Hanukkah celebration.
Representatives for Michael’s (presenters identified as Jillian and Paige) said their December event exceeded prior goals, reporting "nearly 1,300" attendees, six on-site vendors and that net proceeds support Michael’s programs. They acknowledged one noise complaint and some morning parking confusion that were promptly resolved.
Amy (last name not specified), speaking for the Skechers Foundation by phone, reported that the 16th annual Friendship Walk raised "over $3,400,000." She said the organization gives the funds back to South Bay education foundations and scholarship programs; last year Hermosa Beach Education Foundation received a check of $240,983. Amy said about 76% of the funds come from sponsors, with the rest from participants and registrations, and that organizers expect to present checks to Ed Foundations in February.
Rabbi Lisbon summarized the community Hanukkah celebration held Dec. 29 and said organizers were "pleasantly surprised" by turnout and that the event worked well despite a late date in the calendar. He praised staff, volunteers and public-safety presence and reported one operational issue: a drain near the welcome booth where restaurant ice-melt runoff caused some wet materials. He asked staff to follow up with restaurants about setup and runoff minimization.
Commissioners thanked event producers for organization and community benefit and requested staff follow up on the Hanukkah drain problem and ensure residents and businesses are informed of improvements as appropriate. The three presentations were informational post-event reports required under the events long-term agreement process and did not require votes.
