Ada County approves Boise County waste acceptance at county landfill; staff say flow manageable

The Ada County Board of Commissioners approved a request on Jan. 7 from Boise County to accept waste at the Ada County landfill, after staff said the county can accommodate the additional material without new staffing or equipment.
Staff said the request concerns material hauled from Boise County’s Idaho City transfer station. If approved, staff estimated the county would accept roughly 100 to 300 tons per month from Boise County — about 4 to 10% of the landfill’s current flow — and that the county can handle that additional volume with existing resources.
County staff said the additional tonnage is not expected to require extra staffing or equipment. Staff estimated the acceptance could produce additional revenue for the county and noted that Boise County had been hauling material to the Payette landfill previously; Boise County was seeking nearer alternatives.
Longer-term capacity measures were discussed. Staff described measures already underway or planned to extend the landfill’s useful life, including slope redesigns and additional disposal footprint on the northern boundary, changes to compaction processes once new equipment arrives, and potential future organic-waste diversion tied to a proposed renewable natural gas (RNG) project. Staff characterized the Boise County request as temporary and said the county could consider a landfill-use agreement if Boise County seeks an ongoing arrangement.
A motion to approve Boise County’s request passed by voice vote. The board recorded the motion to approve and the motion carried.
