The Parks and Recreation and Community Resources Advisory Commission voted unanimously on Jan. 7 to recommend City Council approve the Hermosa Classic, a Beach Football League (BFL) tryout and festival proposed for May 10, 2025.
Organizers described a full-day footprint that includes a morning combine/tryout for adult players, a family “Kids Zone” coached by former NFL players, and exhibition games (flag and a full-contact tackle-style game without pads) in the afternoon. Tully Banta Caine and co-producers said the BFL’s model pairs community engagement with a draft/tryout structure intended to create local teams that could compete in a planned multi-city series.
Tully Banta Caine said the league plans seven stops for 2025, including several California cities. "Our goal and mission of the Beach Football League is to bring football to all ages and all social classes," he said. Organizers said the Hampton Beach pilot drew 1,000–1,500 attendees and that the BFL would cap participation so the event remains an Impact Level 2 footprint under the city’s rules.
Commissioners emphasized safety and permitting conditions. Lisa Nichols, Community Resources Director, said staff would work with the organizer to confirm insurance, medical support and waiver arrangements. The commission noted past city experience hosting nontraditional contact sports on the Strand and said similar events (for example, beach rugby) were permitted with specific conditions.
Commissioner comments were uniformly positive, citing youth programming and community benefit. Commissioner Barb noted opportunities to coordinate with local youth groups and restaurants; Chair Lang and others praised the family-oriented Kids Zone and the potential to draw visitors in a quiet period between other regional festivals.
The motion to recommend City Council approve the Hermosa Classic passed 5-0 and will be placed on the council agenda for formal action. If approved by council, staff indicated they would advance typical special-event permit conditions including medical/first-aid staffing, insurance, scene management and coordination with police and public works.
