Metuchen board elects Johnson Marcus as president, approves personnel, finance and curriculum items

Metuchen — The Metuchen Board of Education on Jan. 7 elected Dr. Johnson Marcus as board president and Chris Derflinger as vice president during its annual reorganization meeting, accepted the retirement of a longtime lunch aide and approved routine personnel, finance, policy and curriculum items that the administration had previously vetted.

The board held the reorganization meeting at the district offices and opened in compliance with New Jersey’s open meetings law before moving through roll calls, oaths of office and nominations. Dr. Johnson Marcus thanked colleagues after the vote, saying he was “deeply grateful to my colleagues for the honor and privilege to serve our community as the president of our board of education” and called the district’s upcoming facilities work “a once-in-a-generation investment.”

Why it matters: the reorganization installs the board leadership that will oversee district priorities this year and clears a set of administrative and program actions that affect staffing, school trips and building projects. Several routine approvals also released grant-backed work for school facilities and finalized curriculum guides and a fifth-grade outdoor education trip.
