Clinton council schedules Feb. 4 public hearing on rural fire tax district increase

The Clinton City Council voted to schedule a public hearing on Feb. 4, 2025, to consider a possible increase to the fire tax rate in the rural service (fire) tax district that lies outside the city limits.
City Manager JP Duncan told the council the action before them was to set a hearing date only; the council does not adopt a tax at the meeting and must request the county to consider any tax change for the rural fire tax district. "This is a tax that is not inside the city limits, but just in the rural fire tax district area," Duncan said. He added the city must ask the county commissioners to act if the council decides to pursue a change after public comment.
Council members voted to set the hearing. The city emphasized that the meeting will be used to gather public input on whether residents of the rural fire tax district wish to increase the tax to support fire services; no final action or rate change occurred at the January meeting.
The council directed the clerk to publish notice of the Feb. 4 hearing and invited public comment at that time.
