Residents press Chico council on Bidwell Mansion fire, public-safety measures, homelessness and sewer bills

Multiple members of the public used the council's public-comment period to press the City of Chico for actions after the Bidwell Mansion fire and to raise unrelated local concerns including safety, homelessness and sewer billing.

At the start of public comment, a speaker identifying themself as a descendant of Indigenous communities urged the council not to rebuild or celebrate the Bidwell Mansion because of historical claims about the Bidwell family's role in violence against California Indigenous people. The speaker asked for local historical education about the mansion and its historical context. Grama Aqua (as listed on the speaker card) told the council that, in her view, rebuilding the mansion would celebrate figures implicated in historical injustice.

Nicole Nava, a separate speaker, thanked first responders and people involved in the fire investigation, and urged the city to assess security at local landmarks and playgrounds after the arson. Nava said license-plate reader data helped investigators identify a vehicle in the investigation and suggested the city consider camera, drone and license-plate reader tools as part of public-safety planning and the budget process.
