Columbus County staff asked the Board of Commissioners to approve a memorandum of understanding tied to a $590,000 Golden Leaf grant intended for clearing and sewer collection infrastructure on a 38‑acre parcel owned by the Columbus Jobs Foundation.
Economic development director Gary Lanier told commissioners the grant pays for a sewer collection basin and piping to convey wastewater toward a pump station near the Georgia Pacific site. Lanier said the county wants protections so the nonprofit-owned land cannot be sold for an incompatible use—such as a solar farm—after county funds are invested.
Commissioners expressed a desire to review and approve the MOU language. Lanier said county attorney Amanda Prince and staff would prepare draft language, and commissioners voted to table the item to the Jan. 21 meeting so the board could review the proposed agreement.
