Elkhart County approves Community Crossings grant application and advertises 2025 highway supply bids

The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners voted Jan. 6 to approve submission of a 2025 Community Crossings matching-grant application and to advertise for 2025 supply and material bids for the Highway Department.
Tim Jackson, county highway engineer, told commissioners the county completed its project specificity and is applying to the 2025 Community Crossings matching grant call for projects. The board approved the application by voice vote.
Commissioners also approved a notice to bidders for annual highway materials and supplies. Jackson said the notice covers 11 items: liquid asphalt, hot mix asphalt concrete, limestone and recycled concrete, washed sand, dust control, anti-icing liquids, maintenance gravel, gasoline and diesel fuel, fiber optic cable, tracer wire, and communications conduit. The material-and-supplies contracts are procured annually to allow purchases within the approved budget and to secure suppliers ahead of need.
Both motions carried unanimously.
The grant application is a request for matching funds; the board's approval authorizes staff to submit the application and pursue the matching grant program. The bid advertisement authorizes staff to solicit proposals under the county's procurement process.
