Elkhart County consents to Syracuse annexation, requires entire area be annexed at once

The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners voted Jan. 6 to consent to the annexation of territory by the Town of Syracuse with a stipulation that the entire area be annexed in a single action.
County Attorney Steve Olson told the board the territory is adjacent to Syracuse and Elkhart County at County Road 29 and County Line. The stipulation added to the consent requires that the whole area be annexed at once, rather than in separate parcels, to avoid creating “donut holes” of unannexed land.
A board member clarified the annexation involves a new RV park and a mobile home park; the stipulation aims to ensure those properties are annexed together so that the annexed area remains continuous.
The motion to approve consent for the Town of Syracuse annexation carried on a unanimous voice vote.
The consent is a county-level approval linked to a municipal annexation; the commissioners’ action is a procedural consent with a specific condition tied to how the annexation should be completed.
