Stockton Community Services reports In-N-Out reading program, makerspace hours and opens Northeast library naming nominations

Chris Ferro, director of Community Services for the City of Stockton, told the Parks & Recreation Commission on March 27 that the library system’s In-N-Out reading promotion continues through April 15 and the city is launching a 60-day public nomination period to name the new Northeast Library and Community Center.
Ferro said the In-N-Out program gives a free burger to children who read five books before April 15. He also highlighted library makerspaces at the Chavez branch (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays) offering 3-D printers, virtual reality equipment, sewing machines and carving tools.
On an Oak Park Senior Center mural, Ferro said the city will hold a community outreach meeting March 29 at 4:30 p.m. for residents to review proposed artwork and provide feedback; the city also will provide alternate ways for comment for those who cannot attend.
Ferro described the newly formed naming committee for the Northeast Library and Community Center. "It is not the job of the naming committee to come up with names. It is the job of the naming committee to review nominations and then make a recommendation for city council," he said. He said the committee—consisting of public members, commission representatives and staff—will review nominations after a 60-day open nomination period and forward its recommendation to city council in June, with the goal of a name by the end of June.
Ferro also said several recreation staff would attend the California Park and Recreation Society annual conference in San Diego and would return with ideas and program updates. He noted the city is running a story time specifically for children with autism and that, while the department does not yet run a full adaptive recreation program, staff can meet with parents individually to make accommodations.
At the end of his report Ferro announced that city staff are hosting a Stockton Kings playoff kickoff noon to 1 p.m. at City Hall the next day and encouraged members of the public to wear purple in support of the local team. The Kings play their first playoff game in Stockton on Thursday.
