Stockton recreation manager previews spring camps, esports and Pixie Woods opening May 6

John Wright, recreation manager for the City of Stockton, told commissioners on March 27 that spring programming included a two-week spring camp (March 13–24) with over 28 children in the first week, and that the department is continuing seasonal sports leagues and special events as it moves into spring.
Wright said the city concluded its youth winter basketball season with more than 30 teams over two months and introduced a "Start Smart" program for younger children. He said spring soccer and youth volleyball are set to begin in April, with youth volleyball games beginning April 15. The adult basketball winter league concluded in March with more than 20 teams; adult softball opened its season March 20 and adult spring seasons for basketball, kickball and volleyball will begin April 11.
Wright described how the department is running esports programming in person at community centers rather than over the internet. He said the program’s niche is providing console access to kids who may not have the latest systems at home; the city hosts on-site tournaments and sometimes holds a quarterly on-site tournament. "Kids in our programs don't necessarily have access to those latest titles," Wright said. "...we fill that void for them, and they're really excited to see the latest versions of things." He added that if the program expands online, the city would likely contract with a third party to manage online content and moderation because internal technical capacity is limited.
Wright highlighted special events including the annual extravaganza (family activities and egg hunts) and two traveling concerts this spring: April 20 at Seabury Park and May 5 at Paul Weston Park in Weston Ranch, both featuring the band The Soul Trust. He also said Pixie Woods’ opening day and 69th birthday celebration will be held May 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with cake, a petting zoo, puppet shows and crafts.
Wright said the recreation division is discussing continued operation of an expanded learning opportunity program at John Muir Elementary with Lodi Unified School District and hopes to execute a service agreement by the end of April.
