BOCC names Corey Suiso interim Emergency Management Director effective May 30

The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday approved a resolution naming Corey Suiso as interim Monroe County Emergency Management Director effective 5 p.m. on May 30, 2025.
Corey Suiso, who served in the U.S. Navy and has been with county emergency management under outgoing director Shannon Weiner, addressed the board after the motion. “I share that same commitment … and I thank her for giving me the opportunity to come down here with my family, and to serve in a different capacity with the residents of Monroe County,” Suiso said.
Background and board action The item (C-22) was introduced during held items; Commissioner Cates said the appointment recognized a promotion and emphasized confidence in Suiso’s ability to lead. The board had previously received an agenda item to recognize Shannon Weiner’s years of service; Weiner told commissioners she will become emergency manager at the University of Tampa and that she intends to remain a Monroe County resident.
Vote and next steps A motion to approve the resolution was made, seconded and adopted with no opposition. Staff indicated Suiso will assume interim director duties at the specified time and will continue preparedness work ahead of the hurricane season.
What the county said Commissioners praised Shannon Weiner’s leadership during recent crises including Hurricane Irma and the COVID-19 response. They also welcomed Suiso’s appointment and said the county’s emergency management office is in capable hands for the coming months.
