The Linn County Commission on May 27 reviewed a proposed 99-year lease of the Parker senior center to the city of Parker and deferred final action to allow more legal review and time for commissioners to examine the document.
Jason Weber (presenting) said the draft lease had been negotiated previously by the county’s former counsel and the city’s counsel and was submitted to the commission following a prior county meeting. Commissioners asked whether the senior center would continue to be used as an election site; staff confirmed it would remain available for elections. Several commissioners said they are uneasy about a 99-year lease while noting benefits cited by Parker officials: the city would assume maintenance and operating responsibilities and keep a community building open.
Concerns voiced during the discussion included whether the county had exhausted efforts to keep the facility operating at a county-run congregate meal site and broader questions about the county’s long-term strategy for facilities that serve elderly residents. One commissioner said some congregate meal locations have experienced declining participation and that Parker’s building had been the subject of prior county support and rental arrangements.
Commissioners agreed to place the lease on the agenda for a subsequent meeting (the item was set to be revisited at the next Monday meeting), and asked County Counselor Jacqueline to review the document and provide guidance before the commission takes formal action.
