Supervisor Melgar calls for hearing on Vision Zero after new crash-cost report; urges funding and action

Supervisor Matt D. Melgar asked the Board of Supervisors to hold a hearing on a recently issued Budget and Legislative Analyst (BLA) report about street safety and the economic impacts of traffic crashes. He framed the request as a public‑safety and economic recovery priority and called for renewed funding of Vision Zero initiatives.

Melgar cited findings he said were in the BLA report: nearly 100,000 traffic collisions in the past five years, more than 200 deaths, and an aggregate cost to the city and residents of roughly $2.5 billion over that period. He said one fatal crash carries an estimated average societal cost of about $1.6 million and argued that redoubling investments in street safety would save lives and public funds.

Supporters at a rally Melgar referenced an earlier rally of dozens of San Franciscans he attended to highlight unsafe streets. He thanked colleagues who joined the event and urged the board to act promptly.
