“We are very pleased so far with the progress of this program as it blends our structured literacy with the science of reading,” Taylor said, describing the curriculum's phonics, speaking-and-listening and consumable textbook components. She introduced co-teachers Christy Zelinka and Ashley Marco and called up a group of first-graders to perform a short reader's theater titled “Monument City.”
Why it matters: District leaders said the new curriculum gives teachers structured materials and allows students to bring consumable readers home to build individual libraries. The performance illustrated classroom work on drama elements, text evidence and prediction skills.
Student and school recognitions - Senior art show: Board members and administrators praised the district's senior art show for photography, painting, ceramics, sculpture and performance art. The meeting noted that senior Evan de la Vega performed an original composition and that he will attend Case Western Reserve University on a full scholarship. - Mandel Youth Academy: Taylor cited junior Mel Walther and sophomore McCoy Simmons as students accepted to the Mandel Youth Academy at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C), a paid summer program. - Perfect math scores: Taylor announced nine Sun View students who achieved perfect scores on the state math test, saying, “they got perfect scores. All of them. All of them. And that's exciting. That's record breaking for our school to have 9 students score a perfect 818 points on our state math test.”
Teachers and co-teachers described reader's theater as practice in expressive reading, dialogue and historical themes; one student, Jax, introduced the play to the audience. Taylor closed by thanking staff and inviting the public to view student work.
No board action was required on the performance; the presentation served as a demonstration of student learning and as an update on curriculum implementation.
