Public commenters push district to replace phone pouches and adopt sustainability policy

During the Feb. 13 public comment portion of the North Clackamas School Board meeting two speakers asked the board to consider policy changes.
Nate Sorensen, a student at Adrian C. Nelson High School, told the board the district's Yonder phone pouches are ineffective and suggested an in-class solution such as wall-mounted cell holders. "I suggest that we make it so that the students' attendance to class is putting our cell phone in the designated cell phone pouch," Sorensen said. He also asked the board to create formal channels for student representation so students have input on decisions affecting their education.
Parent Noemisa (listed in the meeting as Noemisa Arabia) said she and other parents have formed a green team at Milwaukie El Puente immersion school and have run clothing swaps and bottle-collection fundraisers. She asked the board to adopt a district-level sustainability or climate-action policy to support school-level initiatives and teach students about resource conservation. "That is why more than ever, it is imperative that [the district] adopt either a climate change or sustainability policy," she said.
The board received the comments as part of the community comment period and did not take action during the meeting. Staff and board members acknowledged the suggestions and noted that letters and follow-up requests can be submitted under district policy KBA-AR.
