The Waukesha City Finance Committee on Feb. 25 recommended carrying over $77,406 from the 2024 general fund operating budget to 2025, approving the request on a unanimous voice vote.
City staff presented a breakdown of the requested carryovers: roughly $36,000 for human resources recruitment; about $23,000 for the police department for honor guard and body armor; approximately $13,000 in library grant funds; about $2,400 for buildings and grounds; and just over $2,100 in a hazmat grant for the fire department. The total requested was $77,406.
Joe Sherrill, a city staff member presenting the item, described the carryover request as part of the annual process for non-lapsing operating funds that the committee routinely reviews. “That total of $77,406 is what we're asking for tonight,” Sherrill said, and he noted the amount is slightly lower than the prior year's requested carryover of $88,785.
The committee chair moved to recommend approval of the carryover; the motion was seconded by Alderman McElderly. On a voice vote the motion passed unanimously. Committee members had no further questions during the presentation.
Committee staff noted capital carry forwards will be discussed at an upcoming meeting, and that the committee typically reviews capital projects and larger carryforward amounts in early March. The recommendation will move to the full council per the city's budget and carryover process.
