Girls wrestling program and student activities highlighted at school board meeting

Board members welcomed six girls who qualified for state wrestling and heard a student representative list sports and club achievements and upcoming events.
The Burlington Community School District Board of Education recognized members of the girls wrestling team and heard a student representative report on recent athletic and club accomplishments at its Feb. 10 meeting.
Coach and board members introduced student athletes who described what they enjoyed about the season and how the program has grown. "My name is Nia Odo. I'm a sophomore at BHS, and I think my favorite thing about the season was just growing with this new team," one wrestler said. Coaches and board members noted that the program sent two qualifiers to state in one year and had six qualifiers this season.
Student representative Lainie provided additional highlights: six girls qualified for state (Bryce Navarre, Nia Otto, Amaziah Quillie, Macy Peterson, Kiara Rodriguez and Alana Peterson), with Macy placing sixth and Alana placing fifth in their events. Lainie also reported basketball and bowling milestones, student council Valentine's Day activities and other student-service events.
At the start of the meeting a group of Blackhawk Elementary students and staff later presented their "family groups" program; that presentation is covered in a separate district schools article. During the student segment, the board thanked the pep band for playing at basketball games and praised student and staff engagement in extracurricular activities.
