Abilene ISD unveils school-choice pilot and campus transitions; Wylie outlines bond-funded expansion

Dr. Kyun described a Building Brighter Futures initiative intended to align district facilities and academic offerings with community needs. As part of the plan, Abilene ISD will transition from 13 elementary campuses to 11; two campuses (Ortiz and Thomas) will continue to operate next year for grade 2–5 students who choose to remain, and their names will be retained on the buildings while future uses are determined. Abilene ISD will pilot a parental choice program among Stafford, Martinez and Purcell elementary schools that allows families in the pilot area to choose among those campuses rather than being required to attend the neighborhood campus. Dr. Kyun said the district aims to expand specialized academic options and to pursue grant opportunities to fund STEM and other programs.
“We've always believed what’s good for a school district is good for a city,” Dr. Kyun said, tying school improvements to workforce and economic development.
Wylie ISD Superintendent Joey Light described rapid enrollment growth and a slate of bond-funded infrastructure projects after voters approved a $240 million bond in 2023. Light said the district immediately ordered 3,000 Chromebooks, 11 (11/12) buses, started work on tennis courts, a turf field and is advancing a 60-classroom high school addition that requires construction of an agricultural building first. He said foundation and earthwork are underway for a new elementary on Buffalo Gap Road and that refurbishments at three-decade-old campuses are underway to add modern infrastructure and cabling for increased Wi-Fi capacity.
Ending note: Abilene ISD’s choices and campus consolidations are in planning and pilot stages with parental-selection logistics to be worked out; Wylie’s bond projects are in active procurement and construction stages. No formal school-district board votes were taken at the city event — both superintendents summarized board-approved plans and implementation steps already underway.
