Marian Smith, identifying herself as a homeowner and member of the Mission del Lago Homeowners Association in District 3, told the council she and her neighbors oppose the request and asked the council to preserve the area's residential zoning. "Por esto es un una decepción que se esta solicitud se está considerando. Porque ya no va a ser una área residencial, van a poner una funeraria," Smith said during public comment.
Smith said her household moved to the neighborhood in May 2024 and described the area as a place they chose to retire and age in place. She cited homeownership figures and demographic change while urging the council to maintain the current zoning. "Al proteger a las zonificación residencial, generaciones le pueden llamar a este vecindario a nuestro hogar," she said. Other speakers who identified with Mission del Lago expressed similar opposition.
Council staff and the mayor announced that items 5, 7, 8 and 13 would be continued to a March 20 meeting and that the items would not be decided today; the council also noted some other agenda items had already been rescheduled (earlier in the meeting, items 14 and 15 were continued to Feb. 20). The mayor asked for and received a motion to continue the Mission del Lago items; the motion passed with no roll-call tally announced on the record.
No formal vote on the rezoning occurred today. Members of the public who had registered to speak on the items were told they could either speak today or defer their comment to the March 20 hearing.
