Coconino County proclaims February 2025 National Black History Month

The Coconino County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 4 approved a proclamation designating February 2025 as National Black History Month.
The proclamation recognized the 2025 national theme, “African Americans in Labor,” cited contributions of Black residents to local history and the county’s lumber and sawmill industries, and noted partnerships with community organizations including the Coconino County African Diaspora Advisory Council and the Southside Community Association. Ariana Contreras read the proclamation to the board during the meeting.
Supervisors praised the proclamation and emphasized that local events and educational efforts are part of a broader commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Supervisor Jeronimo Vasquez cited local figures and programs, saying local history includes African American labor contributions and long‑standing community leaders. Supervisor Patrice Horstman made the motion to adopt the proclamation, and Supervisor Vasquez seconded; Chair Begay called for the ayes and the motion passed.
The county noted several planned Black History Month events, including local programs honoring historic civil‑rights leaders and labor organizers.
