Newport Public Library joins Chinook Library Network; council approves intergovernmental agreement

City staff said the Chinook Library Network includes multiple public and academic libraries and provides patrons with improved sharing, a single library card across member libraries, and streamlined catalog and interlibrary loan services. Staff said the IGA and the Chinook Network bylaws were included in the council packet.
Councilor Ehman moved to approve the IGA; Councilor Hall seconded. Councilors spoke in support, noting the arrangement expands patrons' access and has minimal fiscal impact. The motion passed on a voice vote with no recorded opposition.
Why it matters: joining Chinook will let Newport patrons request and receive materials from a larger set of libraries with a single account and improve cooperative services among area libraries. Staff said the fiscal impact to the city is minimal.
Staff will execute the IGA and proceed with steps to join the network under the terms of the agreement and bylaws.
