The Newport City Council approved a personal-services agreement with Apex Real Estate Partners to market a property owned by the Newport Urban Renewal Agency at the northeast corner of Southeast 30th Street and U.S. 101.
Derek Tokos, Community Development director, said the city selected Apex through a competitive brokerage selection process after prior solicitations did not result in a successful development. Under the agreement, Apex will actively market the parcel on behalf of the city; Tokos said the property is owned by the Urban Renewal Agency and previous RFPs had not produced a completed project.
Councilor Hall moved to approve the personal-services agreement and to authorize the city manager to sign; Councilor Emond seconded. The motion carried on a voice vote with no recorded opposition.
Why it matters: marketing the site through a commercial broker is intended to find potential private developers or buyers after prior outreach did not yield a successful proposal. The council did not discuss contract compensation details in the public discussion recorded in the meeting minutes.
Staff will execute the agreement and coordinate marketing activities; council did not record additional direction beyond approving the agreement and authorizing signature.
