The Heritage and Arts Commission on Jan. 28 received updates on the 2025 artist-laureate selection process, outreach to emerging artists, and plans to develop an Artist Laureate Wall; commissioners deferred action on a request to stage a Helen Muirhead retrospective.
Selection process: Commissioners reported three applicants for the 2025 artist-laureate post. The formal selection committee will include the commission chair and vice chair, the previous artist laureate and the mayor or the mayor’s designee; commissioners also said they will arrange panel interviews and provide application materials to the full commission. Staff will coordinate scheduling with the mayor’s office. Chair Gupta said interview dates will be shared with commissioners and interviewers when available.
Underrepresented/emerging-artist outreach: Commissioners discussed outreach to community arts groups and agreed to prioritize emerging artists (several commissioners recommended that term instead of “underrepresented”). The commission’s outreach ad hoc will contact groups in Southern Marin and report back at the next meeting. The commission also welcomed Marin City Arts and Culture’s participation as an example of outreach in action.
Artist Laureate Wall: An ad hoc has measured the proposed wall space in the community room lobby and is gathering cost estimates for signage and hard-wired gallery lighting. Staff will present cost information at a future meeting and commissioners discussed adding a QR code on or near the wall that links to the commission’s events calendar.
Helen Muirhead retrospective: A family inquiry requested a summer retrospective for a deceased artist. Commissioners noted the lower gallery has been set aside this year for emerging artists and that the upstairs calendar already has commitments; after discussion, the commission voted informally to suspend action on the Muirhead request pending further scheduling review and consultation with artists already on the calendar. No formal exhibition date or budget was approved at the meeting.
Awards schedule: Commissioners also discussed opening nomination windows for the Community Educator Award and Heritage Preservation Award. An ad hoc will review award criteria and report recommendations at a future meeting; commissioners expressed a preference to delay formal openings until policies and criteria are reviewed.
