Tiburon commission approves $300 for Marin City Arts reception, schedules lower-gallery run

The Tiburon Heritage and Arts Commission on Jan. 28 approved up to $300 for reception food for a proposed Marin City Arts and Culture exhibit in the town hall lower gallery and set a tentative reception date in March.

O'Shala Marcus, director of Marin City Arts and Culture, presented a portfolio of work and described the collective's goal of staging a small group show in the commission's lower gallery. Marcus said she will act as curator and select works that fit the space; she described a mix of figurative and abstract pieces, sculptures and works made with earth pigments. “The beautiful thing about art in general is that…each piece has a story,” Marcus said during her presentation.

Commissioners discussed schedule and logistics during the meeting. Staff noted the lower gallery exhibition window runs March 1 through April 30, and commissioners proposed a hang date in the first week of March. Chair Gupta moved to approve a budget not to exceed $300 for food for the Marin City Arts and Culture show and to tentatively set the reception for Tuesday, March 11; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.

The commission agreed to allow Marcus latitude to curate the show and to coordinate publicity with town staff and the artist. Commissioners also discussed typical reception practice — artists providing food, the commission providing wine — and asked staff to notify the town banner and publicity contacts.

Next steps identified at the meeting included confirming a precise hang date with the artist (several commissioners suggested Monday, March 3 as a possibility), finalizing the reception logistics, and circulating banner and publicity materials with town staff.
