Amanda Swope, the mayorof Tulsa's newly hired director of tribal policy and partnership (city tribal relations liaison), attended the meeting and introduced herself to the commission.
Swope told commissioners she is "from Tulsa, born and raised" and summarized her background: she worked for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation for six years in self-governance and sovereignty work, later served as the tribe's director of juvenile justice after the McGirt ruling and was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives until resigning to join the mayor's office. She described the office's expected duties: "helping with the detailed conversations that are going on between tribes and the city," providing a tribal perspective on housing, homelessness, economic development and public safety, and representing the mayor at events when he cannot attend.
Commission members welcomed Swope and said they expect her office to coordinate with the City's Native American Affairs entities and with the commission. Commissioners noted the city council's Native American Affairs Commission is scheduled to meet Feb. 3 and that Swope and the mayoral liaison office may coordinate workstreams between the two bodies.
Swope did not announce specific new programs at the meeting; she said she would provide more detail as the office begins operations. Commissioners invited Swope to future meetings and said they looked forward to closer coordination between the mayor's office and tribal stakeholders.
