Commission highlights Council Oak Park conveyance to Muscogee (Creek) Nation as milestone

The Greater Tulsa Area Indian Affairs Commission praised the city of Tulsafor conveying a parcel that includes Council Oak Park to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, calling the transfer a significant step for tribal-city relations.

Commission Vice Chair said the conveyance was the first time the city had transferred land to a tribe and described the move as "a huge, huge milestone for the city of Tulsa and tribal relations and for the Muskogee Nation to have the land where Council Oak tree sits." The vice chair added the event was "very significant" and symbolic of future cooperation.

The commission said the action had been handled on the cityconsent agenda in November and that commission members had taken an active role encouraging the conveyance. Daniel, a commission staff member who helped coordinate meetings between city and tribal leaders, told the commission he assisted with outreach and scheduling that helped move the transfer forward before the administration change.

Commissioners and attendees framed the conveyance as part of ongoing discussions about Dreamkeepers Park and local cultural sites, and as an example of intergovernmental cooperation amid broader legal disputes between the city and tribal nations over criminal jurisdiction.

The commission did not record a formal vote on the conveyance during the meeting; members said the parcel transfer had already been completed by the city and noted the commission packet had included the related letter in November.

The commission said it will continue to monitor development and planning connected with Council Oak Park and Dreamkeepers Park, and encouraged commissioners to stay engaged as the city moves forward with planning and design work.
