Board moves ahead on math pilot; law, AP biology and world language pilots presented for public preview
Summary
The board approved a pre-algebra/Thinking Mathematically pilot for Derby High School and heard presentations and preview plans for law and public safety, AP biology and secondary world-language pilots.
The Derby Board of Education approved a pilot motion for Pre-Algebra and Thinking Mathematically resources at Derby High School and received informational previews of several other high-school and secondary pilots.
During action the board approved a request to pilot Desmos (Amplify) and Vail Math (McGraw Hill) for Pre-Algebra and Thinking Mathematically at the high school. A motion to approve was moved and seconded and carried on voice vote.
Administration also presented previews and community preview opportunities for several other curriculum pilots scheduled for later action: law and public safety pathway materials (Cengage and Pearson resources), an Advanced Placement biology pilot (McGraw Hill and other publishers) and secondary world-language curriculum pilots (publishers including Keith and Wayside). Those items were presented for public previews and scheduled follow-up meetings; no final adoption votes occurred on those items at Jan. 13.
The district will hold public preview events for the law and AP biology pilots and provide demo logins and printed materials for community inspection prior to any action vote. Teachers will pilot materials in classrooms as part of the review process.
