Tempe board approves creation of director of safety and security position

The Tempe Elementary School District Governing Board voted to create a director of safety and security position, a new administrative role the district says will centralize emergency preparedness and school-site safety initiatives.
Superintendent Driscoll and district leader Mr. Mangini presented the job description and told the board the role is intended to “spearhead the initiatives, emergency preparedness plans, [and] school sites,” and provide a dedicated leader for district safety work. The position follows prior district titles such as chief safety officer or assistant director of safety.
Board member Jim Lemon asked whether the salary range would attract applicants. Mangini said the district had benchmarked surrounding districts and sought a competitive range, stating, “yes. I think it's more than competitive.” After discussion, Ms. Windsor moved to approve the job description and creation of the position; Eric Miller seconded. The motion carried on a recorded voice vote.
District staff said they will post the position and evaluate the candidate pool, with any future adjustments to the posting made based on recruitment results.
