Commission receives semiannual transportation report; nominates representatives to present to City Council

The Traffic Safety and Mobility Commission received the semiannual transportation report on Jan. 6, which summarized recent and upcoming traffic and capital projects across Carlsbad and asked the commission to designate a representative to present commissioner comments to City Council.

Tom Frank, transportation director and city engineer, reviewed highlights including recently installed traffic signals and pedestrian crossings along Avenida Encinas, coastal-rail-trail corridor work, continuing traffic-calming construction in multiple neighborhoods, and scheduled projects that will begin construction in the next six months. Frank noted staff issues weekly project updates and invited commissioners to identify concerns for the City Council presentation.

Commissioners nominated Commissioner Cole to be the representative for the commission’s comments at City Council, with Commissioner Prude named as backup. A motion to nominate Cole (with Prude as backup) passed unanimously. The commission also discussed a loss of parking pressure in areas where overnight-parking restrictions were previously adopted and asked staff to follow up on related locations and signage.

Staff asked the commission to provide a commissioner and alternate to present the commission’s comments at Carlsbad City Council on Jan. 28; with the nominations in place staff will prepare the packet for the council briefing.
