Commission approves like-for-like roofing replacement at East Taft Street property

The Norwich Historic District Commission voted May 21 to accept a COA for replacement of rolled roofing on an addition at a property on East Taft Street.
The applicant, who identified himself as Tom, said the addition covering a kitchen and part of a laundry room dated to around 1960 and used a rolled rubber roof. He told commissioners the roof allowed water intrusion and that he had found mold inside a closet beneath the roof. “So I said, we gotta do this now,” Tom said, describing interior water damage and concern about mold.
Tom said the replacement is intended to be like-for-like and will be slipped under the existing sloped roof to prevent future leaks. Commissioners described the request as a standard replacement and noted the building department had referred the applicant to the commission for review. The commission moved to accept the application.

The commission did not add conditions beyond the standard COA acceptance. The applicant was informed he would receive further follow-up by email.
