The Norwich Historic District Commission on May 21 approved a Certificate of Appropriateness enabling homeowners at 11 Huntington Lane to create a roughly three-foot gap in a historic dry stone wall to improve access between two formerly separate plots.
Bethany and Alex, the property owners, told the commission the two original plots had been combined by earlier relatives and are separated on the ground by a dry stone wall. “We would like to put approximately a 3 foot gap in the wall, near to the house itself so that we can have a more efficient and effective way of traveling between the 2 plots,” Alex said, explaining the change is intended for pedestrian use such as moving a lawnmower and wheelbarrow between lots.
Commissioners asked whether the proposed width would be sufficient and whether it would be used for vehicles; the applicants said they had measured their equipment and did not intend the gap for vehicular access. The commission voted to accept the application as presented.
Votes at a glance: The motion to accept the COA passed unanimously; Commissioners Megan, Sean, Tyler, Ed and Chairman Regan Minor voted yes.
The commission did not attach additional conditions beyond the COA process. The applicants were told they would receive an email with the commission’s decision.
