Council declines city funding request for Sky Mountain community event, offers limited personal/in-kind help

An organizer for a Sky Mountain community event asked Hurricane City Council for city funding support Wednesday; the council voted to deny the request, citing limited recreation and marketing funds and other budget priorities.
Penny, who identified herself as a Sky Mountain resident and event organizer, told the council, “Sky Mountain is amazing to work with. I live there. That's my home.” She said the golf course and its staff have been “amazing and forthright” neighbors and that she was not asking the city to “harm the golf course.” She said the event brought visitors and that she had asked the city for assistance with volunteer recruitment and promotion.
City staff and council members said the city’s recreation and parks (RAP) and transient room tax revenue is already allocated to pools, gyms and the Veterans Memorial. The mayor and other members said they did not want to shift already-budgeted funds and described tight priorities. One councilmember who moved to deny the request said the city was “strapped” and listed other priorities. Several members offered to help personally or in-kind — for example, offering pavilion space or volunteer help — but said the city could not fund the event from its limited discretionary dollars.
The motion to deny the funding request was made and seconded and was approved by the council. Councilmembers emphasized they appreciate the event and the golf course as community assets and said staff and elected officials would provide nonbudgetary assistance where feasible.
