Council advances park improvements plan; Lambda group seeks scoreboard, storage and short-term help if fire station sells

Fountain Green City Council and staff discussed park improvements, including two covered pickleball courts, a sand volleyball court, playground equipment and sidewalks to improve pedestrian safety near the elementary school.
Consultants said the council’s top park priority is two pickleball courts under the main bowery to allow year-round play; the courts would include lighting for night use, and nets/posts would be removable so the bowery could still host other uses. The park plan depends on bids and available funding: if bids come in over budget the council may scale back playground or volleyball items.
A separate UDOT grant was described for sidewalks along both sides of the park and new crosswalks for the elementary school; staff said that work cannot start until July 1 and that construction likely would not be visible until the following year.
Lambda, the local community event organization, addressed the council about park impacts and asked permission to move forward with a small scoreboard project at the park. Lambda’s representative said the scoreboard would be modest, electrically powered, and intended to serve tournaments and rec-league play; Lambda said it would pay for the scoreboard but asked whether the city would provide power or help with running electrical service. Council members asked for a formal proposal, a placement diagram (so fireworks lines of sight are not blocked) and information about power and speakers; council encouraged Lambda to pursue grants and offered to help review any formal proposal. Lambda also asked about storage if the old fire station sells; the council said the city plans to build a new shed near the maintenance shed and that temporary Connex (storage container) options could be considered.
Councilors and staff said improvements should be coordinated to avoid conflicts with other planned work near the bowery, and they noted tree clearing and other grounds work will also be needed. No binding contract or construction award was made at the Feb. 20 meeting.
