Wayne County board tables decision on WCHS press box after bid comparison request

The Wayne County School Board tabled consideration of bids for the WCHS football stadium press box and related repairs after members said the two proposals were not directly comparable.

Board member Mister Eaton moved to table both bids and asked the district’s design team and G and G Construction to provide quotes using the same specifications so the board could compare them directly. Mister Staggs seconded the motion; the board voted to table the item until the next meeting.

What the board said: During discussion, district and contractor representatives described key differences between the two submissions. A district representative described the design-team proposal as a standalone, steel two‑story structure and said it included aluminum composite material (ACM) cladding with the school's emblem etched into the exterior. The presenter said the design team’s bid was for "$237,809"; the transcript lists the second contractor’s figure as "vehicle hundred and 12,500," a transcription of which the board asked staff to clarify and re-quote on comparable terms.

Why they tabled it: Board members and coaches sought clarity about whether the press box would be a freestanding structure or attached to the current bleachers, the interior finish (OSB sheeting and painted plywood versus sheetrock), window sizes, stairs versus ladders and total footprint. Several members said the interior finish and whether the unit is freestanding significantly affected price, and they asked for two comparable bids—one for a standalone structure and one attached to the current bleachers—so the board could compare costs and scope.

Next steps: The district will ask the design team and G and G Construction to submit clarified quotes on the same scope. The press-box and stadium repair bids are tabled until the board receives comparable proposals and reopens the item at a subsequent meeting.
