Students showcase morning show and esports season as board hears student presentations

Muhlenberg County High School students presented a segment of their student-produced morning show and gave the board a report on the district’s first competitive esports season during the December meeting.

Esports coaches and students then described the program’s first season. The district fielded teams in multiple titles including Mario Kart, League of Legends and Super Smash Bros. Students reported that the Mario Kart team advanced to the round of eight, League of Legends made a deep run but did not reach the state championship, and the program had individual players place among the top ranks in statewide NBA 2K competition. Coaches said the squad had about 25 participants this season and expects to expand to roughly 40 players in the spring, with plans to increase the number of scheduled matches. Board members and staff praised the program for providing nontraditional competitive opportunities and enabling students without home computers to practice and compete using school resources.
Board members thanked the students and coaches for their presentation and noted the program’s positive effect on student engagement.
