Ellis County Public Works receives municipal concrete award for Cathedral Avenue reconstruction

Ellis County Public Works staff presented a recognition to the commission on Jan. 21 after the Cathedral Avenue reconstruction in Victoria was selected as a 2024 municipal concrete award winner by the Kansas Aggregate Producers Association (CAPA) and the Kansas Ready Mixed Concrete Association (KRMCA).
Brandon K., Ellis County public works director, said the project reconstructed Cathedral Avenue from Sixth Street to Old 40 Highway and completes a multi‑phase rebuild that improves drainage and increases longevity. He said the project also slightly increased clearance under the railroad bridge, reducing the chance of repeated height‑conflict damage from over‑height vehicles; county signage remains conservative to protect clearances.
Public works staff also summarized recent county infrastructure work: a skim overlay on the deck at Vincent Crossing and repairs to a bridge just outside Victoria; both projects included approach repairs and were completed ahead of schedule. Commissioner remarks praised crews for snow‑removal work and long hours during a recent major storm; public works reported roughly 142 hours from Road and Bridge staff and 17 hours from noxious weeds crews on that event.
The award plaque will be displayed in public works facilities and county leaders said the recognition reflects multiagency coordination and volunteer and foundation support on some local projects.
