El Paso council names Alejandra Chavez mayor pro tem, Art Fierro alternate
Summary
At its Jan. 7 meeting the El Paso City Council unanimously appointed Representative Alejandra Chavez as mayor pro tem and Representative Art Fierro as alternate mayor pro tem.
Mayor Oscar Johnson recommended Representative Alejandra Chavez be appointed mayor pro tem and Representative Art Fierro as alternate mayor pro tem, citing Chavez’s small-business background and community board service and Fierro’s years of public service. Representative Nino moved to approve the appointments; Representative Acevedo seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
The appointments give the council designated officials to preside and represent the mayor in his absence. Mayor Johnson said the choice recognized “representation and equity” on the council and praised both members’ experience. The council did not amend the nominations during the meeting.
The vote was taken in open session and recorded as unanimous. No further action or conditions were attached to the appointments.
