Franklin County Commission reorganizes; elects Rob Harris chair, Sabrina Meador vice chair

The Franklin County Commission met for its reorganizational session on Jan. 13 and swore in Sabrina Meador as a county commissioner for the Third District. Judge David Brown administered the oath: “I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of The United States and the Constitution of the State of Kansas and faithfully discharge the duties of Franklin County Commissioner Third District,” Meador said after repeating the oath.
At the meeting the commission selected its leadership for the year. Commissioners voted to make Rob Harris chair and to appoint Sabrina Meador as vice chair. The nominations and subsequent roll-call votes recorded affirmative votes from Commissioners Saldemeyer, Harris, Wehmeyer, Meador and Dickinson for the chair and vice-chair appointments.
The panel also voted to continue the meeting schedule used in the previous year, including regular study sessions. A staff member noted the current schedule was working well for staff; commissioners agreed to keep the dates largely unchanged and to hold a study session the following Monday, subject to confirmation.
Commissioners reviewed and assigned representatives to a series of regional and county advisory boards, agencies and committees. Appointments reported at the meeting included: East (Central) Kansas Area Agency on Aging (ECAN) — Commissioner Wehmeyer; ECAN alternate/related seat — Commissioner Meador; Franklin County Visitors Board — Commissioner Harris; Kansas Workforce Development Board — Commissioner Dickinson; Lake Region Solid Waste Authority — Commissioner Stoudemire; neighborhood revitalization — Commissioner Harris; Ransom Memorial Hospital Board — Commissioner Dickinson; RC&D (Resource and Conservation & Development) — Commissioner Stoudemire; Wellsville Chamber of Commerce — Commissioner Stoudemire; Franklin County Food Policy Council — Commissioner Meador; Prairie Paws Animal Shelter — Commissioner Wehmeyer; Franklin County Development Corporation (FCDC) — Commissioner Harris. Commissioners said they would assist one another informally for recurring commitments (for example, rotating attendance at Chamber coffees).
The commission took a formal vote to confirm the slate of board appointments and recorded unanimous affirmative votes from the same commissioners present during other roll calls.
The commission also named The Herald as the official county newspaper for Franklin County. The motion to designate The Herald passed on a recorded roll-call vote with affirmative responses from Commissioner Dickinson, Commissioner Saldemeyer, Commissioner Wehmeyer, Commissioner Meador and Chair Harris.
Several administrative items and informal arrangements were mentioned during discussion, including commissioners— plans to alternate attendance at routine community events. No ordinances, contracts, budgets or policy changes were proposed or decided during the reorganizational portion of the meeting.
The commission indicated staff will publish the finalized meeting calendar and distribute the list of board appointments to the affected agencies. No implementation dates or additional follow-up directives were recorded for the appointments during the public portions of the session.
