San Benito County task force reports fewer illegal-dumping complaints, outlines summer cleanups

Frankie Sanchez, recycling and illegal-dumping coordinator for San Benito County Integrated Waste Management (IWM), told the local task force on June 6 that the county logged 12 illegal-dumping reports in Quarter 2 and that San Juan Bautista reported none.
Sanchez said the quarter included outreach and events intended to reduce litter and encourage proper disposal. She told the task force the county received approximately $26,000 under the City/County Payment Program (CCPP) for fiscal 2025 and submitted a progress report on an SB 1383 local assistance grant to CalRecycle after receiving $269,157. Sanchez also reported that the Mattress Recycling Council pilot had completed work and the final report was filed May 30.
The Quarter 2 calendar of community events included an Earth Day celebration April 19 in downtown Hollister attended by about 400 people and roughly 30 tabling partners, two monthly household hazardous waste (HHW) events at the John Smith Road Landfill (one in April and one in May), and outreach at recent farmers markets. At the May 1 farmers market, staff handed out about 45 LED bulbs and spoke with about 35 families about hazardous-waste disposal options. A county recycle day on May 10 recorded 75 participants from San Juan Bautista and 16 participants from other parts of the county; staff distributed 102 LED bulbs at that event.
Sanchez said the department held a composting workshop at Dunn Park on May 18 and continued school education programs with partners Point Blue Conservation and Save the Whales. She also described a small community cleanup at Luck Park in San Juan Bautista that covered Anzar Road, Searle Road and downtown San Juan.
Looking ahead, Sanchez listed upcoming events in the task force packet: a community cleanup at Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday, June 14; a quarterly bulky-item event at John Smith Road Landfill at the end of June; monthly HHW events at the landfill from 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday; and additional compost workshops including a vermicomposting session scheduled in the coming days.
Sanchez said the Mattress Recycling Council grant funded outreach and signage related to illegal dumping and that the final grant report is under review by the grant manager. Task force members asked clarifying questions about local participation and thanked staff for event work.
