California Senate adopts resolution designating June 10, 2025 as FSGS Awareness Day

The California State Senate adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 87, designating June 10, 2025, as Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) Awareness Day, after a roll-call vote recorded as 34-0.
Senator Weber Pearson presented the resolution on the floor, saying it "will recognize 06/10/2025 as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis or FSGS awareness day." She described FSGS as "a rare and progressive disease that causes scarring in the kidney and often leads to kidney failure." The senator told colleagues that the measure aims to raise public awareness and support for patients and caregivers.
FSGS is a kidney disorder that Senator Weber Pearson said affects people across ages and backgrounds but "is most common in men over the age of 45, but it is a leading cause of end stage kidney disease in children." She said the disease "disproportionately impacts African Americans occurring at rates 4 to 5 times higher than white Americans," and cited delays in diagnosis and a shortage of specialist care as barriers to earlier treatment. The senator told the chamber that "half of all FSGS patients will require dialysis or a kidney transplant within 5 to 10 years of diagnosis" and that "up to 50 percent of FSGS patients may experience reoccurrence of the disease in their new kidney."
The resolution drew no debate on the floor and was adopted after the secretary called the roll. During the roll call the presiding officer announced, "The ayes are 34. The noes are 0. The measure is adopted." After adoption, Senator Weber Pearson introduced guests in the gallery who she said had lived experience with FSGS: Kendra Carruth, identified as a coordinator with NephCure (a nonprofit focused on rare kidney disease); Matt Coronel, identified in the record as an FSGS patient; Cindy Michelle Atman (introduced as present in the gallery); and Shonda Robinson, identified as a kidney donor.
The resolution recognizes the experiences of patients and caregivers and calls attention to needs the senator said include research, investment, earlier diagnosis and expanded treatment options. The measure as adopted is a formal expression of the Senate's intent to raise awareness rather than an appropriation or regulatory change.
The Senate moved on to other ceremonial introductions following the vote.
